Master the Mix: Kids Bedding

Master the Mix bedding.png

You know we love to mix. People often ask how we get away with mixing so much in a room. In most cases we have an underlying system that makes the mix work. This definitely goes for bedding! While there are no hard and fast rules, here is our general formula:

1) Choose sheets that add a pattern or color. Because you only see a bit of them in a made bed, the pattern doesn’t overwhelm

2) Mix two elements on the main part of the bed. Duvet, quilt, throw blanket: choose two. This allows you to break up a large surface and gives you functional variety. Here in Minnesota, I usually go Duvet + Quilt. In winter, I make the bed with a duvet and fold the quilt at the foot of the bed so you can pull it up as another layer if needed. In summer I reverse it: make the bed with the lighter weight quilt and fold the duvet at the foot. Sometimes that AC makes it cold overnight!

We like it if one of these elements has a pattern and one has a texture.

3) For your shams, in most cases we skip a decoarative option and use two pillows—one with the pillowcase from the sheetset and one with a sham that matches either the duvet or the quilt. It’s best if you can sleep on both of the shams on the bed.

4) We like throw pillows to create a focal point, but we don’t advocate for a lot of them. Often one long lumbar is all you need to tie everything together.

5) If you need a bedksirt, tie it in to another element but don’t feel it needs to match.
