Before and After: Basement Bathroom

We haven’t shared a before and after in a while. This one is small but mighty!

Our clients live in quite an old house in South Minneapolis. We remodeled their kitchen a couple of years ago (but never got photos!) Last year they came back to us to transform their basement bathroom. While the basement is mostly unfinished, this is the bathroom that gets daily use from the whole family (mom and dad and three kids), and it was not really meeting their needs.

The wishlist:

  • A bigger, better, cleaner shower (the old one was a fiberglass insert that had seen better days)

  • More storage (previously there was no vanity)

  • A cleaner look (i.e. get rid of the rough sawn trim and decorative glass block!)

I think we delivered all that and then some.

We centered a 48” vanity on the window, giving them a nice large countertop and much more storage.

No more glass block, chunky wood trim, or low wood wainscoting. We brought in a ton of personality through a charming patterned tile floor and pretty green tile base. Instead of towel racks, the clients wanted hooks: one for each family member. Towels with built in fabric loops hang easily. Now we just need some art for that wall!

In addition to the vanity and hooks for towels, we added this open shelving and hand towel bar over the toilet. A great place to store more attractive bottles and supplies, reserving the vanity cabinet for the things we want tucked away.

We saved the best for last. We were able to expand the shower by more than a foot and added a glass door to keep it light and bright—that old shower curtain made things very claustrophic. An extra large niche means everyone has space for their product. Oil rubbed bronze fixtures correspond to the selections we made in the kitchen

What do you think? I’d say this is a much more pleasant place for these five to start their days.

Craft Construction was our partner in this transformation. They are so good in old homes, and I would say they delivered as always!
