After living abroad for a number of years, this couple in their 40s put down roots in her hometown of St. Paul. The Tudor home had great bones and enjoyed some recent updates but didn’t live up to the fun personalities of the owners. There were also more bedrooms than they needed! Our first order of business was “reprogramming” the spaces to include a home gym and home office—both of which could easily be converted back to bedrooms as needed. Aesthetically, we mined their history for cues: his years at an English boarding school led to the use of primarily English brands for fabrics and wallcovering, while their time together in India inspired the bold jewel tones throughout. We also leaned in to the kinds of polished details that might have lived in the house when it was first built in the 1920s, reveling in tassels, trims, and tie backs. The result is a warm, rich home that is both grown up and youthful, just like the owners.
