When Emily and Brad moved in to this newer home, they didn’t love all the finishes but couldn’t justify a major remodel. Instead, we employed some bold choices they loved to detract from fixtures they didn’t. In the kitchen, a cheerful roman shade and bright red stools draw the eye away from tile and counters they wouldn’t have chosen. Perfectly good but blah window treatments nearly disappear in the office wallpaper—a colorful grid of classic Penguin book covers. Art is deployed to bring personality, including pieces picked up on family travels. The space is now infused with the spunky spirit of the family that lives here.
